A FAMILY of four were killed when the car they were travelling in was involved in a collision with a trailer lorry at Km71 Jalan Sarikei/Betong, 97km from Sibu, early this morning.

Saratok district police chief Mordani Tanin said the victims were husband and wife identified as Azwin Yusman, 30, and Nadziran Mohd Nor, 28, and their children Hazreen Zharfan Azwin, 4, and one-year-old Hazeef Zharfan Azwin from Desa Senadin, Miri.

He said initial investigations revealed that the accident happened at 6.15 am when the driver of car, which was believed to be heading to Sarikei from Betong, had lost control of it, causing it to collide with the lorry.

“The four died at the scene while the lorry driver escaped unhurt,” he said in a statement today.

He said the case was being investigated under section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and the bodies were sent to Sarikei Hospital.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said they received a call regarding the collision at 6.53am before a team from the Saratok fire and rescue station was rushed to the location.

He said all the victims were extricated from the car using special equipment before their bodies were handed to the police. – Bernama, July 11, 2022.
